Some 127,049 illegal immigrants have been registered under the amnesty programme since it started on Monday. Home Ministry deputy secretary-general (senior) Datuk Alwi Ibrahim said the registration was done by 197 immigration offices and 336 outsourced companies. Putrajaya was highest with 5,306, followed by Selangor (4,822), Perak (4,295), Kedah (4,026), Negri Sembilan (3,021), Kuala Lumpur (2,783), Penang (2,395), Johor (2,346), Pahang (1,849), Melaka (977), Terengganu (912), Kelantan (793), Perlis (394) and Labuan (54). "Some 733,662 legal foreign workers were recorded by immigration offices until yesterday (Wednesday) or 61% of the total 1.2 million foreign workers in the country. "The number does not include housemaids," Alwi said in a statement here Thursday. Sabah which started the registration on July 18, recorded 137,217 people and will continue until Monday. Sarawak which started registration of legal foreign workers on Monday, recorded 8,311 up to Wednesday via 28 immigration offices in the state's 11 divisions. - Bernama
